Station VIII: Jesus Meets the Weeping Women of Jerusalem

A great number of the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him. But Jesus turned to them and said, ‘Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For the days are surely coming when they will say, “Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.” (Luke 23:27-29)

It is natural for us to grieve the loss of a loved one. These women weep for Jesus who has taught them of the never-ending love of God. Yet even in his suffering, Christ directs them to his Father….asking their prayers for the nations of the world, and the people who constantly turn away from the Father. He reminds them that those who weep now are indeed blessed, and will come to everlasting joy. Weeping may spend the night, but joy comes in the morning. (Ps. 30:5) This is his Promise to us, a promise he will never break.

My God consoles the weeping women for me, and he does so with love.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on us sinners. Remember us, when you come into your kingdom. +
